Ford is famous for starting the pony car revolution with the original Mustang, released in 1964 as a '65 model. It was an amazing success, and went on to sell well over 600,000 that first year. The Mustang may have started out as a pony car, but was soon transformed into a muscle car with a wide variety of high output V-8 engines and performance packages, including the Mach 1, Shelby GT's, and the Boss Mustangs.
Ford's Special Vehicle Team (SVT) was formed in 1991 to engineer and produce high performance production cars. The 1993 Mustang SVT Cobra with a 235 horsepower 5.0 liter engine was their first vehicle, and their latest is the Shelby GT500 with a 5.4 liter supercharged engine rated at 500 horsepower and 480 ft-lbs of torque. They've also produced the SVT Lightning pickup truck, the SVT contour, and the SVT Focus. Their latest creation, the Ford GT, was a 500 horsepower mid-engined supercar based on the 60's Ford GT-40 race car.
