Chevrolet Impala Picture Gallery
The Impala was introduced in 1958 as Chevy's top of the line full sized car. The Impala Super Sport debuted in 1961. It included heavy-duty suspension and brakes, and a 348 cubic inch engine with 305 to 350 horsepower, or the 409 with up to 425 hp. In later years, the SS package could be ordered with any engine and was more of an appearance package.
1969 was the final year for the original Impala SS. It was available only with the 427 cid engine which was rated at 335 to 425 horsepower depending on the version.
After a long absence, the Impala SS was revived in 1994. Based on the 9C1 police package, the SS included upgraded suspension, thicker front and rear anti-roll bars, four wheel disk brakes, and unique 5-star 17 inch aluminum wheels. It was powered by a slightly de-tuned LT1 5.7 liter (350 cid) Gen II small block Chevy producing 260 horsepower and 330 ft-lbs of torque. In the Corvette, the LT1, with 4-bolt mains and aluminum heads, was rated at 300 hp. The last traditional Impala SS - a full-sized, rear wheel drive sedan - rolled off the assembly line in late 1996. A total of 69,768 Impala SS cars were made from 1994-96.
